About the company :
The Darwin District in Bordeaux is a sustainable ecosystem located on the right bank of the Garonne River, at the heart of the future Bastide-Niel eco-neighborhood. The project, called the Darwin Ecosystem, was launched in 2011 and aims to create a living, working, and meeting space centered around the challenges of sustainable development. It is an experimental place that strives to be exemplary in terms of sustainability and social entrepreneurship.
In response to current climate challenges, the former Niel Darwin barracks have actively addressed the ecological challenges we face. Additionally, the renovation of the wasteland is well-managed, using innovative and ecological techniques (solar panel roofs, green energy suppliers, etc.).
The district is integrated around the former Niel barracks, which have been rehabilitated to host coworking spaces, shops, restaurants, shared gardens, exhibition and cultural spaces, as well as training and awareness centers for environmental issues.
The key concept at Darwin is the circular economy. During the visit, one can discover collaborative workshops and initiatives in urban agriculture (permaculture, aquaponics, composting). Many associations come together to regularly organize events around art, culture, or the community. The main hangar features organic stores and a restaurant, all located near a skatepark.
